3D Process Planning at Saab AB
Saab Aerostructures had been using DELMIA tools for several years when a contract for the Boeing 787 Project came up. Saab decided to extend its 3D process planning capabilities. Saab team took the bold move to change to 3D model-based definition, a new way of working that affected everyone concerned with the project, from the engineers all the way to the mechanics in the workshop.

“Pushing through this change and going paperless has been a huge change”, explained Daniel Nilsson, responsible for implementing the new manufacturing system and making sure it is efficient. “However, we felt it was time to bite the bullet. We believed that by increasing our capabilities with DELMIA and PLM, we would win the Boeing 787 contract. Even if we hadn’t won this contract, we knew these efficiencies would help us with future work.”
Saab AB states huge benefits using Delmia and 3D Process planning
Process driven changes are 90% cheaper to put in place when compared with our previous methods.
Prototype production proved the potential for the build cost savings to be at least 33%
As in previous projects, Saab was helped by DELFOi, a business partner of DELMIA in the Nordic countries. Boeing, Saab, and DELFOi have consequently worked alongside each other for several months bringing maturation to critical design and assembly processes for the seven different doors on the new plane. The very first of these doors were shipped during the spring 2007.
